Some of Liverpool's popular restaurants and takeaways are among the places given the lowest rating possible by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
Each establishment receives their rating following an inspection conducted by a food safety officer from the council. If they are given a zero food hygiene rating, it means that urgent improvement is necessary. If they are given a five rating, the highest, it means hygiene standards are "very good".

Altogether nine establishments in Liverpool have fallen foul of the FSA’s rating scheme. A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said: "A zero rating for a food outlet means urgent improvements are required and we would expect any premises which receives such a rating to take immediate action to rectify any hygiene issues. We would stress, however, that the majority of restaurants, cafes and other food premises in the city achieve high ratings."
How is the scoring done?
The scores are done by local authority hygiene teams. A health officer will look at three criteria types during an inspection:
- How hygienically the food is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.
- The cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation of the building.
- How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe.
The Food Standards Agency says that to achieve a zero rating there "are very likely to be performing poorly in all three elements and are likely to have a history of serious problems."
