The former first lady, 57, appeared on BBC’s The One Show on Thursday night to talk to young women and offer them advice for the future. Michelle joined the popular BBC show’s hosts Alex Jones and Jermain Jenas via video call to offer a message of hope to young women.

Speaking to pupils from Mulberry School for Girls in Tower Hamlets and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington, Mrs Obama shared her experiences and offered advice on mentorship, leadership and sisterhood.

“Each of you right now, today, you have the power to change someone’s life dramatically,” said Mrs Obama.

“If you know how to get yourself through it you will succeed.”

The pupils took turns asking the former first lady some important questions about her life and experiences.

When asked about the best piece of advice she was given when she was younger, Michelle Obama said: “Don’t be so hard on yourself, you have time for growth and you’re going to have bumps along the way, but that’s part of the process.

“Sometimes we as young people, particularly as women, we’re afraid to make mistakes.

“What I’ve learned is that there are few mistakes that you can’t recover from or can’t learn from.”

Mrs Obama has a special relationship with Mulberry School for Girls since she visited in 2015 and has managed to maintain this close bond over the years.

She donated over 1,000 copies of her book, Becoming, to the schools which has been specially adapted for young readers.

When asked about the importance of sisterhood, Mrs Obama said: “We don’t get anywhere without it.

“A piece of advice that I would give you all is to prioritise developing female relationships.”

She added: “I can’t wait until we’re over this pandemic and we can be together in person.
