The site started to malfunction for tens of thousands of users on the East Coast at 9pm Friday, with Twitter releasing a statement saying they were 'working on fixing a problem'.

Hours later, the site appeared to be back up and running, before problems were again reported on Saturday morning. 

Users have complained about being unable to log onto the app while others claimed tweets were not loading. 

According to Down Detector, reports in problems surged again around 8am, and were continuing into Saturday afternoon. 

Twitter released a subsequent statement, saying: 'We know that parts of Twitter still aren't working for some of you. We're fixing an issue with our servers to get things back to normal soon. Thanks for sticking with us.

They did not disclose how widespread the problems were. 

It comes after as users in the United Kingdom also experienced outages amid Prince Philip's funeral. 

The issues are also said to be affecting people in Mexico, South America, South Africa and the Philippines. 

It follows a tumultuous start to the year in which the company permanently suspended then-US president Donald Trump's account and expanded its use of warning labels to target misleading posts about coronavirus vaccines.
