POLITICAL figures in the area have expressed their sadness at the news that an MP has died after being stabbed multiple times at his constituency surgery.

Sir David Amess, Conservative MP for Southend West, was stabbed at his constituency surgery in Leigh, Essex today, Friday.

Essex Police have confirmed the MP has died following the incident.

The surgery was being held at the Belfairs Methodist Church, in Eastwood Road North.

A man reportedly ran into the church in the last hour, before the MP was stabbed "several times".

James Grundy, the MP for Leigh, expressed his condolences to Mr Amess' family.

Mr Grundy said on his Facebook page : "We have received the terrible news that Sir David has sadly passed away from his injuries.

"I should like to convey my deepest sympathies to his family on behalf of both myself and my constituents."

Meanwhile, Chris Green, MP for Bolton West and Atherton, tweeted: "So sorry to hear the dreadful attack upon my friend and colleague Sir David Amess.

"My prayers go the his family and friends at this awful time."

Meanwhile, the Leigh Constituency Labour Party's Facebook page added: "It is sad to hear that Sir David has passed away from his injuries.

"We would like to pay our respects to his friends, family and colleagues.

"There is no place for violence in politics."
