Boxing Tonight: TV schedule, UK fight time and undercard for Fury vs Hammer, Eubank Jr vs Awdijan and more

Hammer and Fury headline a huge night of boxing in Newcastle as Marshall faces Muzeya and Eubank Jr warns Awdijan he will silence his social media talk

Boxing Tonight” is i’s weekly look ahead to the Saturday night action in the UK and beyond, with the details on how to watch and what to look out for

Hughie Fury has never been one for comparisons with cousin Tyson, but they are hard to avoid as Christian Hammer returns to the UK.

Hammer was stopped by the current WBC heavyweight champion in 2015, one of his final fights before being handed a backdated two-year drugs ban. On the back of that, he insists he is unfazed by facing Hughie in Newcastle. “He’s not Tyson,” after all.

The 34-year-old has his own point to prove, however, with three defeats in his last seven. He put on a show against David Price but against Alexander Povetkin, Luis Ortiz and Tony Yoka, he was up against some serious opposition and went the distance on all three occasions, losing each by unanimous decision.

Fury has his own loss against Povetkin on his record, but he insists he has become a different specimen – both physically and mentally – since the summer of 2019.

“Before, it was a boy against a man,” he told i. “You could see with my shape and everything. Now it’s a different story. I took all the learning from those fights and it’s brought me on leaps and bounds.”

The British heavyweight is the clear favourite against Hammer, though as much as he is looking forward to building momentum on the back of victories against Pavel Sour and Mariusz Wach, it is also a relief for him to get back in the ring after 10 months.

“Training does get frustrating at times, not being able to fight as much as I wanted” he admits. “I have been dodged a bit, so hopefully now, I’m with the right platform and getting fights – and coming back starting with Hammer it’s a good start already.”

The platform in question is promoter Boxxer, who endured enough hurdles in their opening night on Sky Sports, including the cancellation of Chris Eubank Jr’s main event with Anataoli Muratov. They are back with a stacked card in Newcastle nonetheless, with Eubank making his return against Wanik Awdijan and Savannah Marshall enjoying a homecoming as she bids to defend her WBO middleweight title against Lolita Muzeya.

Eubank Jr vs Awdijan

As Eubank arrived in Newcastle, he was greeted by the strange sight of a fan asking him to sign a microwave in the middle of the street. “Next Gen” obliged, probably thankful that he is on the scene at all.

Muratov was himself a late replacement for Sven Elbir, so it was all the more frustrating for Eubank that his last outing was scrapped at the 11th hour.

Awdijan had been in contention to step in for Elbir himself. Eubank insists he could not make the weight, but Saturday’s opponent hinted on social media that he was trying to avoid him.

However, Eubank still has one eye on the bigger picture and presuming he makes light work of Awidjan, he is hoping for a title shot before the end of the year.

“December, a big name or a title fight,” he told i. “Whichever one comes first. I’d like both, if we can get both, beautiful. I’m a prize fighter, this is a business. There’s no preference. It just has to be a fight the fans are going to get behind – and it will be.”

He will no doubt sympathise with Lewis Ritson and Hank Lundy, whose fight has been scrapped with the Newcastle fighter suffering from illness. Lundy was less than impressed. “Came all the way to London and Lewis Ritson pulls out of the fight claiming to be sick,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m p**sed because I was going to knock him out.”

Marshall vs Muzeya

Marshall faces one of her toughest tests yet against Muzeya, with the Zambian unbeaten with eight knockouts from her 16 wins so far.

As fascinating as it will be to see whether she can rattle Marshall with her power, most will see this as a hurdle in the way of the fight most British boxing fans want to see, the long-awaited grudge match between Marshall and Claressa Shields, arguably. the best female fighter in the world.

Marshall, defending her WBO middleweight belt, insists she is not thinking about Shields just yet regardless. “It’s Lolita that’s in front of me,” she said. “Lolita that’s there on Saturday night.

“I know I will beat Claressa. And I know I will beat Lolita. But saying it and doing it are different things.

In California, Mikey Garcia is taking on Sandor Martin in the super-lightweight division. It’s only Garcia’s second fight since his defeat to Errol Spence Jr in their fight for the IBF world welterweight championship – he is otherwise unbeaten.

Meanwhile, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury finally appear to have resolved the fallout from the Bronze Bomber allegedly failing to show his conqueror due respect after his 11th-round KO.

Wilder released a statement on Twitter, telling Fury: “Congratulations for his victory and thank you for the great historical memories.”

“The greatest trilogy of all time,” Fury responded. The “Gypsy King” is set to meet the winner of Dillian Whyte’s bout with Otto Wallin next, while Wilder has a medical suspension for six months after his knockout.
