Strictly Come Dancing's Shirley Ballas has told her fans she has booked an appointment with her doctor after being flooded with messages after appearing on the show.

Concerned viewers contacted the head judge, originally from Wallasey, after believing they had spotted a lump under Shirley's arm when she appeared on TV.

In a video update on Instagram before Saturday night's Strictly, Shirley, 61, thanks viewers for their concern and shared she had booked a doctors appointment for next week.

She said: "I got some alarming messages from people saying that when I picked my arm up they could see lumps or bumps.

"I did some self checks and I can't feel anything, but I'm going to go to the doctors on Tuesday.

"To all women out there please keep checking yourselves," she urged her followers.

"To those people that were concerned enough to message me saying you could see lumps and bumps... thank you," she added, in the video filmed in her BBC dressing room prior to the show.

There is a history of cancer in Shirley's family and she has had two scares herself, writes the Mirror.

The most recent was in June this year when she discovered a lump in her shoulder.

She said at the time: "It’s something between two bones and they are not really sure what it is yet.

"They have done the dye and the MRIs plus this and that. I get the results in a few weeks. The gentleman seems to think it will be fine but, still, it is worrying."

Shirley, who has a family history of breast cancer, had her DD implants removed two years ago after being told they could block the signs of cancer being detected.

She received a health warning after a mammogram and was told 'there's no guarantee that we can ever see behind the implants', which spurred her into action.

BBC bosses gave Shirley permission to undergo surgery in the middle of filming Strictly.

Shirley underwent a four-hour operation to go from a DD back to her natural A cup.

"I went to get a mammogram and one of the nurses flippantly said to me we can’t really see behind the back of these implants.

"I just decided for health reasons for me I was going to take them out," she explained after the op.

Her mum Audrey was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2019 and her grandmother had several procedures as she battled the disease while her aunt has also suffered from it.

Shirley was supported through the difficult time by her boyfriend Danny Taylor, who she met during a pantomime the year before.
