EPL: Gary Neville reacts to Maguire’s performance in Man Utd’s 4-2 defeat to Leicester

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has said the club’s centre-back, Harry Maguire, is not overrated.

Neville said this while reacting to Maguire’s display during Man United’s Premier League 4-2 defeat to Leicester City at the weekend.

Recall that Maguire had suffered a calf injury during Man United’s defeat to Aston Villa last month.

The England international missed Man United’s matches against Villarreal and Everton in addition to England’s World Cup qualifiers.

But Maguire was a surprise inclusion against his former club Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

The Man United captain started alongside Victor Lindelof as Raphael Varane was ruled out due to injury.

His performance against Leicester was not good enough as the Foxes defeated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side at home.

However, Nevilles believes Maguire wasn’t ready to return to action for Man United against Leicester.

“Maguire is overrated? No, Maguire is a fantastic player,” he said on Instagram live.

“Maguire was not ready yesterday, he was nowhere near being ready for that match. I think he was thrust back in because of Varane’s injury. Maguire was well off yesterday.

“But I think he’s the right type, Manchester United need more like him. Maguire’s not good enough? We’re on the wrong path here if we’re now starting to say Harry Maguire is not the right type of signing.

“I think Harry Maguire is the perfect type of character for United. I think he’s performed well since he’s come to the club.

“Yesterday he was miles off it, he was nowhere near at the level in terms of fitness-wise and we’ve all been there as players.

“But this is certainly not the time to start throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”
