Ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Liverpool, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have both named their respective combined XI.

After selecting their teams, there were only three positions the Sky Sports pundits disagreed on: central defence, central attacking midfield and a forward.

It was Liverpool who dominated both sets of squads, with nine members of Jurgen Klopp's squad making their way into both Carragher and Neville's team.

Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were all picked by both pundits, though the pair had their differences elsewhere.

Carragher left Cristiano Ronaldo out of his side in favour of Mason Greenwood, selected Bruno Fernandes in midfield and Joel Matip to partner Van Dijk.

Neville, meanwhile, swapped out Greenwood for Ronaldo, chose Harry Maguire over Matip but surprisingly opted for Roberto Firmino ahead of Fernandes.

Explaining why Matip got the nod at centre-back ahead of Maguire, Carragher told Sky Sports: "I actually think Matip has possibly been better than Virgil van Dijk this season.

PAUL GORST: 'The white-hot fury of an enraged Diego Simeone will have warmed Jurgen Klopp's heart'

"He's a player who goes under the radar because he's not a huge name, he came in on a free transfer, he's been there a long time under Jurgen Klopp and he's had injury problems.

"But every time he plays he's top class, he really is. That partnership with Virgil van Dijk is really good at the minute, it really is.

"He's played in so many big games, this season he's almost been an ever-present, he's been fantastic."

On the topic of omitting Fernandes, Neville added: “I refuse to disrespect Firmino.

“The work in possession and out of possession that he does on behalf of the team is unbelievable.

“I don’t believe that he ever really gets the full respect that he deserves for his performances and how he dovetails with midfield, how he dovetails with the two wide players, how he fills back in in big games.”

"It wasn't easy but just the idea he's one of the greatest goalscorers of all time and, with Salah and Mane, I thought he should be up front.

"You would have him up front. In that team, with Fabinho and [Jordan] Henderson behind, with Firmino behind and those two out wide he would be absolutely devastating."

Carragher XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Fernandes; Mane, Greenwood, Salah.

Neville XI:Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Maguire, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Salah; Firmino, Mane; Ronaldo.
