We'll be bringing you the latest updates as a multi vehicle crash is causing long delays in Liverpool.

North West Motorway Police confirmed that patrols are at Speke Boulevard after a crash involving multiple cars.

Further patrols were also called to a second, unrelated crash, in the Speke area on the dedicated slip to the A5300 from A562 Speke Road.

They said delays are expected throughout the morning as the cars involved are recovered.

A third crash has also been reported on Ranelagh Street, before Hanover Street. A witness told the ECHO a bus has crashed into a barrier and there are bus diversions in place.

Merseyside police also confirmed they were in attendance of the Speke crash.

A spokesperson said: "We can confirm that officers are in Speke following a damage-only RTC in Speke this morning, Tuesday 19 October.

"At around 7.45am, a call was received of a collision involving four cars, by the junction of Speke Boulevard and Penketh Drive.

"No injuries have been reported and the cars will be recovered. Thanks for your patience as we deal with this incident."

Services now operating as 'normal'

Arriva Merseyside has said the crash has been resolved and all services are resuming as normal.

Slow traffic in the area of closure

Inrix travel monitoring reports that the closure is in place on Ranelagh Street between Great Charlotte Street and Wood Street.

The traffic is heavy in the area and bus services continue to be disrupted.

Merseytravel said all buses to and from Liverpool ONE are either delayed or being diverted.

Roads are 'mayhem'

Marta Bona, who was on the 82 bus on her way to work, said: "All the buses had their hazard lights on and some of the drivers had got out to look at what was going on. The crash was at the entrance to Central station but the buses were stopped right back to The Adelphi. When I walked past on my way to work I saw the single decker bus which had crashed into a barrier outside the station.

"The front was all smashed in and the railing was bent out of shape. There were police there and none of the passengers were left on the bus by that point. The traffic was getting really bad and I could see everyone getting off their buses to walk - it was mayhem."

Arriva Merseyside 'investigating'

An Arriva Merseyside Spokesperson said:

We are aware of an incident on Hanover Street which occurred earlier today involving one of buses on service 79, we are currently investigating the circumstance.

Service update as Ranelagh Street now closed

Ranelagh Street has now been closed in both directions while the crash is dealt with.

Arriva Merseyisde said a number of diversion and delays are in place.

Speke update

Traffic has now returned to normal around Speke following two seperate crashes this morning.

The first took place on Speke Boulevard and lead to one lane being closed for around two hours.

Four cars were reportedly involved in the crash but police confirmed no injuries were reported.

The second crash took place on A5300 Knowsley Expressway at A562 Speke Road.

Merseyside police urge people to avoid the area


A Merseyside police spokesperson is urging peopel to avoid the area surrounding Liverpool Central Station and Ranelagh Street. They said:

We can confirm that officers are in Liverpool City Centre this morning (Tuesday 18 October) following a damage-only road traffic collision.

At around 9.20am, a report was received of a bus colliding with railings close to Liverpool Central Station on Ranelagh Street.

No injuries have been reported and a diversion is in place, please avoid the area and take an alternative route while the bus is recovered.

Images show that Merseyside police are on the scene of the city centre, Ranelagh Street bus crash.

Inrix travel monitoring reports that there is slow traffic and delays in the area, as well as disruption to public transport following the crash.

Merseytravel has confirmed all bus services to and from Liverpool ONE will be diverted or delayed due to the crash on Ranelagh Street , just before Hanover Street.

'Mayhem' in city centre

A third crash has been reported in the city centre this morning that is reportedly causing 'mayhem' on Hanover Street and Ranelagh Street.

A witness told the ECHO that a bus crashed into a barrier near to the traffic lights outside Liverpool central train station.

They said: "It’s mayhem at that turning by the Adelphi and the McDonalds. All the buses are backed up.

"This police car is blocking Hanover Street and all the buses have their hazards on.

"All the buses are making people get off by the Adelphi."

Speke Boulevard partially blocked

A561 Speke Boulevard Eastbound is partially blocked after a multi-vehicle accident after the Speke Retail Park.

There is also queuing traffic due to an earlier accident on the A5300 Knowsley Expressway at A562 Speke Road.
