Susanna Reid has publicly apologised to a Good Morning Britain guest after the show failed to broadcast her title in what viewers are branding a ‘sexist’ mistake.

Professor Devi Sridhar, the Chair of Global Public Health, Edinburgh, appeared on the ITV breakfast programme on Tuesday morning alongside Professor Angus Dalgleish, Professor Adam Finn, and data specialist John Burn-Murdoch to talk about the latest Covid headlines.

While the male professors had their titles on display, Professor Devi’s was nowhere to be seen.

Following her appearance, Professor Devi highlighted the mistake on Twitter, writing: ‘Can women be professors in 2021?’

Susanna responded: ‘I am really sorry that this happened. We introduced you with your title Professor but inexplicably it wasn’t on screen.’

Luckily, it appears there is no bad blood from Professor Devi as she accepted Susanna’s apology.

‘Innocent mistake- thanks always Susanna,’ she replied.

Viewers were less than impressed by the hiccup though, with many slamming the error as sexist.

‘@GMB blatant misogyny again,’ one fumed. ‘Why was @devisridhar not given her professional title?’

‘Everyday sexism,’ another added. ‘This is not ok.’

‘This is one of those subtle examples of misogyny that most don’t notice,’ a third said. ‘But it’s exactly these small, possibly unconscious, differences in how men and women are treated that normalise the bigger differences. It snowballs.’

Professor Devi was brought in to discuss whether the UK should have a plan B when it comes to Covid preparation this winter as last week’s figures showed one in 60 people had the virus last week.

‘The UK should learn from our European neighbours, for instance, masks in public spaces, vaccine certification and pushing vaccination to the higher level,’ she said.

‘The NHS is struggling and they struggle every winter and this winter they have Covid on top of it.’
