Today, (18th August) I have written to Dominic Raab MP, the Foreign Secretary, regarding 300 Sikhs and Hindus stuck in Afghanistan, who have taken refuge in a Gurdwara in Kabul.
I have asked him to do all he can to ensure that the UK forces who are still on the ground in Afghanistan ensure the safety of the people, who have taken refuge in the Karte Parwan Gurdwara in the Aghan capital.
You can read my letter to him here:
Dear Dominic,
I am writing to you today to raise the case of roughly 300 Sikhs and Hindus in Afghanistan, who have taken refuge in the Karte Parwan Gurdwara in Kabul.
The scenes we have all seen from Afghanistan over the last few weeks have been truly harrowing, and there is no doubt in my mind that we have not seen the worst yet. The Taliban are infamous for their persecution of religious and ethnic minorities. Although they have assured those sheltering in the Gurdwara of their safety, I do not think it would be prudent to take them at their word.
I understand UK forces are still on the ground in Afghanistan, and I would ask that your office do all they can to ensure the safety and security of these civilians, to ensure that they can reach safety abroad.
I warmly welcomed the Government’s announcement that it would take 20,000 refugees from Afghanistan. I would welcome a commitment by the UK Government to prioritise religious minorities, such as Sikhs and Hindus, who are at very serious risk of persecution under the Taliban. I know that those who have taken shelter in the Gurdwara would be most welcome in West Bromwich East.
While the UK Government remains committed to withdrawal, it is absolutely right that we do all we can to give those who fear for their lives under the Taliban, a safe haven and refuge.
Yours Sincerely,
Nicola Richards MP
