Bulls hint at ‘small’ signing that can make a ‘big impact’

Amid links with a former member of the Springbok coaching staff, the Vodacom Bulls will be announcing a signing that could make a “big impact” on Friday.

According to a report on SuperSport.com, the Bulls will on Friday unveil former Springbok assistant coach Gert Smal as the team’s new Currie Cup coach.

Smal worked as an assistant coach to current Bulls director of rugby Jake White in a partnership that took the Springboks to the 2007 World Cup.

The 59-year-old has since served as Ireland’s forwards coach between 2008 and 2013 and was then appointed as Western Province’s director of rugby, a position he held up until 2018, when he left to join White at Japanese club Toyota Verblitz.

The 2022 edition of the Currie Cup is expected to get under way from 15 January and run until late June. This means that it will overlap with the current Vodacom United Rugby Championship season, placing a strain on player resources. SA Rugby’s U20 Provincial Championship is also likely to be on the go at the same time.

The Lions have already confirmed Mzwakhe Nkosi as their head coach for the Currie Cup.
