FIVE men have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder of a man whose body was found in Lancashire.

Christopher Hughes, 37, from Wigan, was found dead off White Moss Road South in the Skelmersdale area on Tuesday, February 22.

A post-mortem concluded he died as a result of multiple serious injuries.

Shortly after 4.30pm on Friday, February 18, a member of the public reported seeing a man being forced into the back of a vehicle on Almond Grove in the Worsley Hall area of Wigan.

An investigation was launched and officers established that this was likely to be Christopher.

Extensive enquiries to find him were ongoing when his body was discovered at 11am on Tuesday morning.

Five men, aged 29, 30, 33, 48 and 51, were arrested in connection with Christopher's kidnap and death.

Police confirmed today that charges of conspiracy to commit murder had been brought against them.

Those charged are:

Alan Jaf, 51, of Ridyard Street, Wigan

Khalil Awla, 48, of Greenwood Avenue, Wigan

Erland Spahiu, 33, of Uppingham, Skelmersdale

Curtis Balbas, 30, of Matheson Drive, Wigan

Dean Smeaton O'Neill-Davey, 29, of Bulteel Street, Wigan

They all appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court this morning (March 5, 2022) and have been remanded in custody until their next hearing at Manchester Crown Court on  April 8.

 

 

 

 

 

Detective Chief Inspector Carl Jones, of GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "Our thoughts remain with Christopher's loved ones whilst we work around the clock to ensure that those responsible for his death face justice.

"We are continuing to work with colleagues from Lancashire Police to follow all lines of enquiry.

"Anyone with information which may assist us with our investigation should contact us or Crimestoppers as soon as possible."

Last week, Christopher's mum, Susan, has paid tribute to him, saying: "The family of Chris wish everyone to respect their privacy at this difficult time and are heartbroken at the loss of their loving son, father, brother and uncle.

"He will leave a part in the family that can never be filled.

"RIP Christopher David Hughes."
