The House of Commons may be on hiatus until next week, but the chamber is reopening for a brief — but historic — mid-recess session for a “joint video address to Parliament” by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who made a similar address to the U.K. Parliament last week. In a letter to House Speaker Anthony Rota asking him to approve the special event, Government House leader Mark Holland says Zelenskyy “has been at the forefront of Ukraine’s defence of their sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democracy in the face of … Russian aggression.”

Holland also acknowledges that such addresses “are typically preceded by motions adopted by the House,” but, “unfortunately, this was not possible before the adjournment of the House on March 4, 2022.”
