Simon Jordan has been speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT about Newcastle and their transfer plans, where he mentioned Crystal Palace.
What’s the story?
Well, Jordan and White were discussing a story from The Telegraph, which states that Newcastle only plan to spend £60m this summer.

That is despite the fact they could easily spend a lot more, following the Saudi Arabian takeover.
When discussing the topic, Jordan suggested that Newcastle need to look at Crystal Palace, for example, if this is the approach they plan to take, as the Eagles would be the first type of club to leapfrog.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the 53-year-old said: “If they’re going to build in the summer and spend £60m, they’re going to supplement a spend of £100m in the January transfer window. They spent £30m – £40m in the summer window, so they will have spent £200m over three transfer windows.
“Some clubs might see that as quite a significant spend. If you’re looking at teams you’re going to go past, if you look at Crystal Palace, the first teams you start chasing down are the ones in your immediate vicinity.”
Clearly, Jordan doesn’t think Newcastle will go far under Eddie Howe with their current crop of players, as he also tipped them for a bottom seven finish with the squad they have right now.
Newcastle should use Crystal Palace as a model
In our view, Newcastle should look at what Crystal Palace did last summer, and use it as a model to spend their newfound riches.
The south Londoners decided to target exciting prodigies such as Marc Guèhi, Michael Olise, Odsonne Edouard and Conor Gallagher, all of whom have shone.
Yes, Newcastle could sign superstars for millions of pounds, but that wouldn’t be a sustainable approach.
By signing young players with huge resale value, the Magpies can continue to grow as a club while succeeding on the field.
In Crystal Palace’s first season using this approach, they have seen Guèhi, Gallagher and Tyrick Mitchell play for England, while Patrick Vieira has led them to the FA Cup Semi-Final and a comfortable league position.
Clearly, it works – Newcastle must take note, and be sensible with their money.
