Saints winger Jay Henderson can’t wait to test himself against some of Europe’s best young stars after being called up for international duty again.

The flying St Mirren academy talent was recently named in Scot Gemmill’s Scotland Under-21 squad for their crunch upcoming qualifiers against Belgium and Denmark.

The 20-year-old picked up his first cap in March, coming on as a second half substitute for Man City prospect Lewis Fiorini in a 2-0 defeat to Turkey.

While he’s gutted he had to cancel his summer holiday plans, Henderson revealed can’t wait to keep learning from his teammates and his talented opponents as he looks to kick on in Scotland colours next month.

Speaking exclusively to Express Sport, Henderson said: “I got my first cap in March which was a really special moment. It was a great boost personally.

“It was a tough debut against Turkey. They got the better of us and I have to admit I was nervous coming on, as you are making any debut.

“It was an absolute honour. You grow up dreaming about playing for your country and hopefully I can make my full debut next month.

“You want to play against the best in Europe and it’s a great learning curve for me.

“I was supposed to be going on holiday next month and had to cancel it, but I’m sure it’ll be worth it!

“The Scotland group is great. There’s a lot of talented boys, guys who have been around Rangers this season and boys from down south as well.

“Fiorini plays with Man City, Stephen Welsh is a league winner with Celtic, Marc Leonard plays with Brighton.

“It’s great to go away with them and I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from them again this time around.”
