Greece is to end its face mask requirement in planes and public places from next month, authorities have confirmed.
This means passengers flying in and out of Greece will no longer be asked to wear face masks, or at indoor or public venues, from June 1.
According to Schengenvisainfo, the Hellenic Republic government's decision comes following the EU's announcement to abolish the mandatory face requirement in airports from May 16.
Despite the EU recommendation, rules for mask wearing beyond this date differs between countries.
However, this does not mean face masks are done for good.
Greece’s Health Minister Thanos Plevris said: “Mandatory mask-wearing remains in hospitals, nursing homes and urban transport like buses, metro and tram.”
The Minister added that a decision will be made for ferry passengers in the next few weeks.
The Greek Ministry of Health previously announced that the country would abolish Covid-19 entry rules.
Still, Greece’s Civil Aviation Authority announced that face masks would remain mandatory, despite the lifting of all entry restrictions.
Some countries have decided to keep face-covering rules in place for another period.
Italy will continue to ask all citizens on flights to and from Italy to wear face masks until June 15 - as well as on all other forms of public transport.
Spain has also confirmed that all passengers flying in and out of the country will be obliged to to wear face masks on planes.
What are Greece's current Covid travel rules?
Earlier this month, Greek authorities officially lifted all Covid-19 entry requirements.
This means all incoming travellers, regardless of country of origin, can enter Greece without having to provide special documentation.
Upon arrival, travellers are no longer required to show the following:
- Proof of recovery from Covid-19
- Proof of vaccination against Covid-19
- A Covid test certificate
Since March 15, Greece has abolished the need to fill out a passenger locator form.
Previously, this requirement applied to all travellers who entered Greece.
Are there still Covid restrictions in Greece?
As well as dropping entry rules, Greek officials have lifted all Covid restrictions within the country.
While in Greece, people can enter cafes, bars, restaurants, and other public places without being asked to show one of the certificates mentioned above.
