EMYR Huws insists Colchester United should be aiming high as they head into the new League Two season.

The 28-year-old midfielder is back at the JobServe Community Stadium, after signing a one-year deal with the U's.

Huws enjoyed a productive second half of the previous season for Colchester, making 12 appearances for them.

He helped them finish the 2021-22 campaign strongly and the Wales international now wants them to carry that through to the new season.

Huws told CUFC: "I'm chuffed to be back.

"It's good to get the deal done and I'm looking forward to the new season.

"I really enjoyed working with them (Wayne Brown, Joe Dunne and Dave Huzzey) last year and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do, this season.

Gazette:

"I'm looking for more consistency and as a team, we want to start the season well and see what we can do.

"We finished the season strongly and we should be taking that into the new season and aiming high.

"It's a great bunch of lads so it's really nice to be working with them again."

Huws started his career at Manchester City and had loan spells at Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Northampton Town.

He eventually left City to join Wigan on a permanent basis in September, 2014.

The 28-year-old played 11 times for the Latics and had a loan spell at Huddersfield Town, before leaving to join Cardiff City on a permanent basis in 2016.

Gazette:

Huws made four appearances for the Bluebirds before leaving to join Ipswich in January 2017, initially on loan.

He spent four seasons at Portman Road but left at the end of the 2020-21 season at the end of his contract.

The Wales international's debut for Colchester at Sutton United in January was his first competitive game for more than a year.

Huws is now looking to hit the ground running for the U's, having missed out on game time in the latter weeks of last season due to injury.

He added: "I'm just looking forward to working hard again and seeing what we can do - it's exciting.

"It'll be good to get some games and build up the fitness and get in the groove again."
