Unusually hot conditions are forecast for much of England until Tuesday (19th July), so it’s vital that older residents are aware of what they can do to get through the heatwave as comfortably and safely as possible.

Age UK offers a range of free information and advice designed to help older people live well during the summer months and protect themselves when the temperature soars.

The charity advises that elderly people stay inside during the hottest time of the day, try to keep their homes cool when inside and take cool baths or showers.

Age UK also provide support through their free advice line on 0800 055 6112. Lines are open 8am-7pm, 365 days a year.

It’s not just humans that suffer when temperatures soar. It can also be extremely dangerous for dogs who are very susceptible to heat stroke, especially if left in a hot car.

As their bodies work differently from humans it is very important for dog owners and members of the public to be able to recognise the signs of distress.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs include heavy panting, being uncoordinated or collapsing, excessive drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea.

If you suspect your dog has heatstroke, contact your vet and give them plenty of water and shade.
