Greenhead Park's paddling pool will not reopen this summer as planned, Kirklees Council has confirmed.

Plans to reopen the much-loved pool were revealed by the council in July, but failed test results and the upcoming hosepipe ban in Yorkshire have put an end to any hopes of it reopening this summer. The council said 'system testing' took place at the pool earlier this month.

The tests had to be carried out as a legal requirement and were also necessary as the pool has been shut for two years, the council said. But the initial test results 'failed', meaning the pool cannot reopen safely.

The council also cited Yorkshire's hosepipe ban, which will come into force on August 26, and the drought status declared by the Environment Agency as other key reasons for the pool's prolonged closure. "Even if test results had passed the council would not be in a position to fill the pool for reopening," a council spokesperson said.

Councillor Naheed Mather, cabinet member for environment, added: "I am disappointed the paddling pool will not be able to open this summer. However, the health and safety of those using it are paramount as well as the preservation of our precious water supply.

"We must do everything we can to reduce our water usage and be more mindful of when and how we use our water. Greenhead Park is one of our award-winning Green Flag parks and I hope those who visit enjoy everything else this wonderful park has to offer."

The council has confirmed Yorkshire's hosepipe ban will mean council vehicles will not be washed as usual, with the exception of bin wagons and highways maintenance vehicles. Bedding plants and trees across the district will also not be watered, meaning residents may see trees starting to lose their leaves and bedding plants beginning to die off.

Park teams will monitor water levels at ponds in the district's parks to ensure that they do not drop to levels which would endanger wildlife.
