In yet another horrific incident, a girl was set ablaze in Jharkhand’s Dumka district by the accused for not agreeing to marry him.

The accused, identified as Rajesh Raut, has been arrested.

The victim has been referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi as her condition is critical.

The district administration has handed over a cheque of Rs one lakh to the family members for better treatment of the victim.

According to the police, the accused was known to the girl.

"A girl was set ablaze in Dumka; accused arrested. She has been referred to Ranchi. The boy was known to the girl. The accused is already married and wanted to marry the victim. The parents (of girl) were not ready for the marriage," said Shivender, DSP, Jarmundi, according to ANI news agency.

Earlier, the accused threatened the girl and said “If you do not marry, I will burn you to death like the Dumka petrol scandal." The accused was already married and wanted to marry the girl. The parents (of the girl) were not ready for the marriage.

The investigation is underway.

Reacting to the incident, Union Minister Arjun Munda said, "The law and order situation in Jharkhand is pathetic, the administration should do something. They should give importance to these areas and to matters related to women."

The incident in Dumka comes months after a 19-year-old girl was set on fire for turning down a man’s proposal. Days after this incident, another half-burnt body of a woman was found in the Dumka district.
