Arunachal Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Thursday inaugurated the long-awaited electric-cum-gas crematorium for Hindus in the state's capital, Itanagar. The first ever burial cum cremation centre has been constructed by Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC).

IMC Mayor Tame Phassang, Biri Basang, Deputy Mayor IMC, and Corporator, Tarh Nachung were also present at the inaugural event.

Talking to the media, Mein acknowledged the construction as a boon for the people of Itanagar region. He called the construction of the crematorium a sacred religious act and congratulated IMC for the same. Mein also urged the citizens to encourage and support local vendor women, handicraft artisans making traditional products from bamboo and other local products. Apart from improving the livelihood standards of the people, it will also produce more job givers than job seekers, Mein said.

He also expressed grief at the loss of lives at Jalpaiguri during the Durga idol immersion.

Meanwhile, Tame Phassang, ascertained that the installation of crematorium is a mandatory concept and is the beginning step towards making Itanagar a smart city. Phassang highlighted that every human being has to die someday, and everyone deserves a dignified funeral service.

"So, for our Hindu brothers who faced difficulties while burning their own deceased ones, we planned to construct this burial cum electric crematorium under 14th finance commission funds,'' he added.

Phassang informed that the overall cost of the construction of the crematorium was Rs 1.40 crore and the work was awarded through tender to an outside state construction agency which is technically sound and experienced in constructing electric crematoriums all over the country.
