The Mixed Martial Arts world is dealing with the tragic news that former UFC star Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson has dies at just 38 years old.

The former UFC light heavyweight title challenger was suffering with an illness, which Fox Sports reported as ‘organ failure due to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.’

Johnson signed with Bellator last year, fighitng in May 2021 when he knocked out Jose Augusto Azevedo, and the organisation reported his death on Sunday.

A Bellator statement read: ‘It is with great sadness we acknowledge the passing of Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson.

‘The Bellator family is devastated by his untimely passing and we send our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.’

Johnson fought UFC legend Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight title twice, losing on both occasions, but became friends with DC.

‘Rest Easy my brother,’ tweeted Cormier. ‘For a guy who struck fear in so many peoples heart Anthony Johnson was a caring person. From random text to check ins during loss. What a person he was, Rumble will be missed. Sometimes life doesn’t seem fair. Horrible news #RIP #Rumblesquad @Anthony_Rumble.’

Former UFC middleweight champion and UK MMA legend Michael Bisping wrote: ‘Utterly shocked and saddened by this. RIP. Sincere condolences to all his family and loved ones.’

Current UFC bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling added: ‘Sad day for the MMA world. Still setting in for me that we lost another really good person. RIP Anthony Johnson.

‘Life is so short. I don’t think we realize how fast and easily it can be taken away from us. Cherish these moments with your friends and family while can.

‘Sometimes I feel like I work so much that I miss out on “living” with the ones I care about the most. I hope everyone out there is taking care of themselves as best as they can and making memories you’ll never forget.’

Johnson’s initial stint with the UFC from 2007-2012 was largely as a welterweight, where he fought England’s Dan Hardy, who added his condolences.

UFC star Michael Chiesa added: ‘RIP Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. One of the most prolific KO artists our sport has ever seen. My prayers go out to his family and everyone affected by this tragedy.’

Bellator commentator and former UFC referee John McCarthy wrote: ‘Crushed and devastated to learn that @Anthony_Rumble has passed away. AJ was one of the good guys, he was a great man with a huge heart. God Bless you AJ, I will miss you my brother. RIP Rumble.’
