Celtic ‘thrash out’ £3m transfer for Alistair Johnston with Canada defender set to ‘pocket’ 10 percent of deal

CELTIC are said to be closing in on the £3m transfer of Canadian international Alistair Johnston.

And according to a report 10 percent of that fee will go straight into the right-back’s pocket.

The defender played for Canada on Sunday as they were beaten by Croatia to be knocked out of the World Cup with a game to spare.

That saw him up against the man he could be set to replace at full-back – Josip Juranovic.

Celtic also have Tony Ralston who can play in that position.

But that doesn’t seem to have stopped them making their move to land Johnston.

The 24 year-old has been impressing with his displays for MLS outfit Montreal FC.

And according to the Daily Record, Celtic are willing to shell out £3m for the player in January.

And the paper claims £300,000 is set to be banked by the player as part of the deal.

Johnston – whose mum is from Northern Ireland meaning he will have no issues getting a work permot - had admitted earlier in the week that he had been flattered to be even linked with the Hoops.

He said: “It’s an honour just being linked with them, my phone’s been blowing up. To be linked with a club like Celtic is obviously something I think every footballer is excited by.

“It’s one of the most passionate fan bases in the world.

“It’s a club that even people who don’t follow football know who it is. I’m super excited to get linked to them.

“But right now, the focus is just solely on the national team. Club things, that will get figured out once January hits.”

Juranovic has been attracting attention from England and the Continent and has been stalling on signing a new deal.

And Parkhead bosses may prefer to ship him out on January while his stock is high – allowing Johnston and Ralston to fight it out for the jersey.

Commentating on the Canada vs Croatia match, the BBC’s Steve Wilson claimed a deal for Johnston was already done and dusted.

He said: "The right-sided defender for Canada, Alistair Johnston who plays for Montreal, I'm told that a fee has been agreed and he will be joining Celtic after the World Cup.”
