Portugal can secure their place in the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup with a game to spare by defeating Uruguay in their Group H clash on Monday.

A 3-2 victory over Ghana in their opening game on Thursday saw them get off to the perfect start after a second half penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo and further strikes from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao wrapped up all three points against spirited opposition.

But looking to leapfrog them in the standings and stop them in their tracks is Uruguay, who were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by South Korea in their opening game. A defeat here would leave them at risk of an early exit from the tournament.

When is Portugal vs Uruguay?

Portugal vs Uruguay will kick-off at 7pm (GMT) on Monday, November 28 at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail, Qatar.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two sides and their second in World Cup competition, following Uruguay’s 2-1 defeat of Portugal in the last 16 in Russia four years ago.

That also represented their last meeting, in which Edinson Cavani struck either side of a Pepe equaliser at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi to send Uruguay through to the quarter-finals.

Team news

With a place in the last 16 on the line, Portugal will need to improve on their defensive unit after conceding two goals to Ghana in their opening match, but Fernando Santos will be tempted to use the same starting lineup once more in order to achieve a second victory.

That means Ronaldo and Felix will lead the line once more following their goals four days ago, with Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Ruben Neves making up the midfield. Leao will be pushing for a start following his goal against Ghana from the bench, while fellow substitutes Joao Palhina and William Carvalho will also aim to break into the starting lineup.

Uruguay face the very real prospect of an early exit from the group stage if they fall to defeat against Portugal, so a far better showing than the one they gave against South Korea will be needed in order to avoid needing a win in their final group game.

Darwin Nunez and Luis Suarez can be expected to start in a front three once more, although Facundo Pellistri may be at risk of dropping to the bench in favour of a more clinical and experienced forward. Edinson Cavani fits the bill, although playing him out wide is unlikely, so Nicolas de la Cruz or Maxi Gomez may be in line to come into the side.
