A 'police incident' closed a busy road near Leicester city centre for more than eight hours. Glenfield Road was shut in both directions following a collision in the early hours of this morning (Friday, February 3).

Police were initially unable to confirm the exact nature of the incident, but said the closure - which was between the junctions with Fosse Road and Henley Road - was expected to be in place for 'some time'.

In a tweet shared to followers of its official Twitter account, just after 3am, Leicestershire Police wrote: "Traffic Update | 03:05 | Due to a Police incident, Glenfield Rd, Leicester is closed in both directions in between the junctions with Fosse Rd and Henley Rd. It is expected that the road is going to be closed for some time."

A second tweeted added: "Please divert via Henley Rd and Hinckley Rd and use Henley Rd, Hinckley Rd and Fosse Rd to access the side streets affected by this closure. Updates will follow. Many thanks. 2/2."

Leicester Area Traffic Control has confirmed that the road is now open.

Pedestrian killed in serious crash involving Mercedes-AMG car on main road in Leicester

A man has died following a collision on a main road in Leicester in the early hours of this morning, Friday, February 3. Glenfield Road, in the Western Park area of the city, has been shut since about 3am.

Emergency services were called to the scene, close to the junction for Woodville Road and Henton Road, shortly before 2.30am, according to Leicestershire Police. The force has now confirmed that the casualty - a pedestrian in his 40s - was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed from Woodville Road to Fosse Road North. There is a police cordon still in place this morning, close to the Bolton Road junction by the Sir Charles Napier pub.

Crash investigators are continuing to examine the scene for evidence. The road is likely to remain closed for some while.

Two cars have just been removed from the scene

Our photographer Chris Gordon was informed by police that two cars involved in the incident had just been removed prior to his arrival at the scene.

There appears to be two separate police cordons in Glenfield Road. This is a photograph of crash investigators towards the Fosse Road end. The black Vauxhall within the cordon is a police vehicle, unrelated to the incident itself. This picture is taken close to the Bolton Road junction and the Sir Charles Napier pub. There is another police cordon further up Glenfield Road, away from the city centre.

Diversions in place

Drivers are warned to avoid the area if possible. Traffic is being diverted along Henley Rd and Hinckley Rd. Motorists are advised to use Henley Road, Hinckley Road and Fosse Rd to access the side streets affected by this closure.

The fire service has said that none of its crews were requested to assist at the incident.

The road remains shut this morning

Traffic monitoring website Inrix is reporting theat the road remains closed this morning. It said: "Glenfield Road is closed in both directions due to a police incident from Fosse Road North to Woodville Road. Traffic is coping well. The road has been shut since the early hours of the morning."
