A man has died following a collision on a main road in Leicester in the early hours of this morning, Friday, February 3. Glenfield Road, in the Western Park area of the city, has been shut since about 3am.

Emergency services were called to the scene, close to the junction for Woodville Road and Henton Road, shortly before 2.30am, according to Leicestershire Police. The force has now confirmed that the casualty - a pedestrian in his 40s - was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed from Woodville Road to Fosse Road North. There is a police cordon still in place this morning, close to the Bolton Road junction by the Sir Charles Napier pub.

Crash investigators are continuing to examine the scene for evidence. The road is likely to remain closed for some while.

A police spokesman said: "A man has died following a collision in Leicester's Glenfield Road in the early hours of this morning. A silver Mercedes-AMG collided with a pedestrian – a man in his 40s – close to the junction with Henton Road.

"Police were called shortly before 2.30am but the man was pronounced dead at the scene."

He added: "A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody while inquiries into the incident continue.

"A road closure remains in place at this time."

Police have issued a public appeal for information. Detectives are particularly keen to speak to the drivers of two other cars.

One is a "small, dark hatchback" and the other a "silver estate" – which the spokesman said are "known to have been in the area at the time the collision occurred". Detective Inspector Steve Kilsby, from the force's Serious Crime Investigation Unit (CIU), said urged the drivers of these vehicles to come forward.

"From what we know so far, I believe the drivers of these two vehicles will have information or footage that could help our investigation and I would urge them to make contact with police," he said. "I would also ask anyone else who was in the area at the time and witnessed the collision or saw the car involved beforehand to get in touch. Any details you’re able to provide could help."

Drivers are warned to avoid the area if possible. Traffic is being diverted along Henley Road and Hinckley Road, and motorists are advised to use Henley Road, Hinckley Road and Fosse Road to access the side streets affected by this closure.
