Gary Lineker has joked that Casemiro was sent off for "attempted strangulation" in the 2-1 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The United midfielder was sent for an early bath with his side 2-0 up at Old Trafford, his dismissal kicking a previously dismal Palace side into life. Players from both sides came together by the touchline, with pushing and shoving forcing referee Andre Marriner to book Antony and Jeffrey Schlupp.

But after being told to review the fracas by VAR, he watched a replay of Casemiro holding Will Hughes by the neck and showed the 30-year-old a straight red card. He will now miss the double-header against Leeds United before a meeting with Leicester City.

And former Foxes striker Gary Lineker took to Twitter to aim a dig at Casemiro, writing: "Casemiro shown a red card with VAR intervention. Not sure attempted strangulation is mentioned in the laws, but if it was...."

In the aftermath of the incident, former Swansea defender Ashley Williams told BBC Sport: "It's a red, Casemiro has two hands around Hughes' neck. You can't really argue with it. He wants to back up his mate Antony.

"It's a little bit silly from Casemiro. There was a lot going on and he just got carried away. Palace have gone down the other end and scored and now Man United have 15 minutes to play with 10 men."

Shortly after United were reduced to 10, Palace pulled one back through Schlupp, and Patrick Vieira's side continued to pile on the pressure in search of an unlikely point. But Erik ten Hag's men managed to hold firm to take a huge three points.
