The Good Food Guide has recently announced its new listings of local gems across the UK, some of the best food and drink you’ll find in a casual, accessible setting. A local Ely tearoom that has been a staple in the city for more than a decade has finally made itself onto the prestigious list.

The Good Food Guide explained that local gems have been chosen because they "have a lot of love ploughed into them. There’s often top quality suppliers combined with personal passion and a loyal local following. They’re the gems of our food culture and the places not to miss when you’re in the area."

Amongst restaurants in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland and others, Peacocks Tearoom in Ely has made its way into the local gems list.

Owned by George and Rachel Peacock, the family owned Peacocks Tearoom and fine B&B is located right on the waterside of the city and overlooks the river. Opening more than a decade ago, the business has grown from just one room in the family house and the pretty front garden to taking over the family kitchen, and then the hall.

The teahouse offers all manner of lunch delights: cream teas, soups, salads and sandwiches - the menu is renewed daily, with fresh produce prioritised. At its absolute best in the summer sun, here you can drink international tea from china tea cups and watch the boats as they journey down the river.

If you think this sounds like paradise, you're not the only one that thinks so.

The Good Food Guide said: "Don’t let the perma-queue put you off. Tea and cake or a light lunch at this pretty riverside tea room in Ely is worth the wait.

"Come for leaf teas poured into pretty bone-china cups, choosing from a list that scopes the world to find oolongs, chais, Chinese pu-erh and even ‘builders’, with its extra spoonful. Homemade quiches, soups and sandwiches satisfy lunchtime needs, while handsome cakes are displayed on a china-filled dresser, as tea room tradition dictates."

You can find the tearoom here: 65 Waterside, Ely, Cambridgeshire, CB7 4AU. To find out more about the Tearoom you can visit their website here.
