A Peterborough resident has completed a once in a lifetime mountaineering challenge in memory of his aunt. Jack Steward, 24, scaled Mount Toubkal in Morocco, raising funds for Sue Ryder's Thorpe Hall hospice.

Jack's aunt Paula was just 56-years-old when she died following a three-year battle with cancer. She had received support from the hospice during the last three months of her life.

This was the second mountain climbing challenge that Jack has done in aid of Sue Ryder, after running the national three peaks in August 2022. His climb took two days as he battled high altitude and freezing cold weather with temperatures as low as minus 24 degrees.

Jack said: "During my aunt’s final days at home, the hospice nurses went above and beyond and offered her unbelievable care. After my first fundraising challenge for Sue Ryder, I was left wanting to do more.

"Mount Toubkal is 13,671 feet high – much higher than any of the UK mountains I climbed - so it was definitely more of a challenge, but I believe these things are all about mindset and if you tell yourself you can do it then you will.

"As I got further up the mountain I hit a blizzard, which made it difficult to see. It was freezing too, my gloves were frozen, my socks, the zips on my coat and even my facial hair, but it was worth it. It was a beautiful place, and I was so pleased to get to the top."

Jack and his friend have raised £810 for the hospice so far. If you would like to donate to his fundraising page, you can click the JustGiving link here.
