Davide Ghiotto and Marijke Groenewoud win World Cup speed skating golds in Poland

Four gold medals were handed out at the meet in Tomaszow Mazowiecki on Saturday. Davide Ghiotto and Marijke Groenewoud were among the big winners. Groenewoud was a clear victor in the women's 1500m, finishing over a second clear of the rest of the field. Italy's Ghiotto was triumphant in the men's 5000m event in Poland.

Davide Ghiotto and Marijke Groenewoud were among the victors at the speed skating World Cup meet in Tomaszow Mazowiecki on Saturday afternoon.
Groenewoud was a clear victor in the women's 1500m, finishing over a second clear of the rest of the field.
The Dutchwoman completed the time trial in 1:56.67, 1.16s ahead of Norway's Ragne Wiklund in second, while Miho Takagi came home in third place to take bronze.
Italy's Ghiotto was triumphant in the men's 5000m event, fending off competition from the likes of Patrick Roest and Sander Eitrem to seal the top spot on the podium.
Ghiotto's time of 6:17.45 saw him edge out Dutchman Roest by 0.82s at the meet in Poland, with Eitrem finishing exactly a second behind the Italian to claim the final spot on the podium.
Meanwhile, Japan's Wataru Morishige came home to take gold in the men's 500m event.
Morishige's time of 34.78s seconds saw him edge out Canada's Laurent Dubreuil by nine-hundredths of a second, while Yuma Murakami came home in third for a second Japanese medal.
The final event of the day was the women's team pursuit, which was won by Canada.
A trio of Ivanie Blondin, Isabelle Weidemann and Valerie Maltais fended off efforts from the Dutch and American contingents to top the podium.
