Swindon Town poised to make free transfer swoop for 65-cap international

Swindon Town are poised to sign free agent centre-back Adrian Mariappa, The Real EFL has claimed.

Swindon Town have been able to breathe some life back into their play-off fight with back-to-back League Two wins.

It hasn’t been the smoothest start for Jody Morris but he’ll be hoping this is the start of a push back into the top seven. The Robins sit in 10th as it stands, four points away from the play-off spots.

Now, in a bid to aid their charge up the table, it has been claimed the club are set to dip into the free agent market.

The Real EFL has reported that Swindon Town are poised to sign 36-year-old centre-back Adrian Mariappa, who has been without a club since his departure from Burton Albion in January. He played 12 times for the Brewers but his deal was not extended and has been out of the game since.

Mariappa is a 65-time Jamaican international and has played masses of Championship and Premier League football over his lengthy career.

Where did Neil Warnock start his managerial career?

Another option at the back…

The reportedly imminent signing of Mariappa will give Morris further options in defence, with the veteran capable of playing in the middle or on the right-hand side as a full-back.

He’s made 222 Championship appearances over the course of his career and has played 168 times in the Premier League, so his pedigree is just about unmatched when it comes to free agent players who are still active.

The fact he’s played this season already should mean he’s still got some sharpness too, despite a brief spell out of the game.

A deal until the end of the season should supply Morris with another valuable option tag the heart of defence, but it remains to be seen just what impact he can have at the County Ground.
