Swindon Town recruit ex-Liverpool and Middlesbrough man to ease injury woes

Swindon Town have signed free agent centre-back Tom Brewitt, it has been confirmed.

Swindon Town have been forced into fielding a pretty makeshift backline due to injuries. Against Leyton Orient at the weekend, Tom Clayton was alongside youngster Harrison Minturn and full-back Joe Tomlinson in the back three as Jody Morris contends without almost his entire centre-back ranks.

They’ve now dipped into the free agent market to bolster their ranks somewhat though, signing 26-year-old defender Brewitt.

As announced on Tuesday evening, the former Liverpool and Middlesbrough defender has signed on a free transfer until the end of the season to provide some much-needed cover at the heart of defence.

Brewitt has been out of the game since December, when his deal with USL Championship side Hartford Athletic came to an end. He’s spent the best part of two years over in the United States after spells in England with AFC Fylde and Morecambe following stints in Liverpool and Middlesbrough’s academies.

Which club is nicknamed the Blades?

English experience…

Much of Brewitt’s career in first-team football has been spent in America but he does have some valuable experience of playing in England too. His spells with Liverpool and Middlesbrough mainly saw him feature for the U21s but they would have served as a solid footballing education for the centre-back.

He then played senior football with AFC Fylde and Morecambe, playing 27 times for the latter during their time in League Two.

Given that he’s only been without a club since December, it will be hoped there isn’t a need for a significant period of adjustment for Brewitt, as Swindon’s need for centre-back options is immediate. Even if he doesn’t come straight into the side, the Liverpudlian will at least provide some cover if Morris is to persist with the same backline that held leaders Leyton Orient to a draw.
