Devon Conway 78 spurs New Zealand to 155/2 on inclement first day

New Zealand ended the first day of a bad weather marred opening day of the second test on 155 for 2 wickets off 48 overs spurred by Devon Conway who scored 78 off 108 balls after being put into bat by Sri Lanka at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Friday. New Zealand lead the 2-match series 1-0 having won the first test by two wickets.

Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne’s gamble to put in the home side after winning the toss did not yield the desired result as Conway and his opening partner Tom Latham 21 put on 87 for the first wicket off 25.1 overs. Conway led the way with a forceful knock filled with.13 boundaries. Sri Lanka made one change to the side that did duty in the first test bringing in 23-year old wicket-keeper batsman Nishan Madushka for Niroshan Dickwella.

Sri Lanka got the initial breakthrough when Kasun Rajitha took out Tom Latham snapped up by Prabath Jayasuriya with the score on 78 after 25.1 overs. He faced 76 deliveries without making any big shots.

Not long after Dhananjaya de Silva stepped in to get rid of Conway taking a return catch as New Zealand lost a second wicket for 118 in 35.4 overs.; The third-wicket pair of Kane Williamson and Henry Nichols negotiated the next 12 plus overs on a sedate note. Williamson had reached 26 off 76 balls piercing the boundary thrice while Nichols was on 18.off 32 with a solitary boundary.
