The Spaniard’s deal expires in the summer

David De Gea has reportedly turned down the offer of a new contract from Manchester United.

De Gea’s deal is set to expire at the end of the season and the Spaniard is currently the world’s highest-paid goalkeeper, earning in the region of £375,000-a- week.

The Athletic have reported that United are keen to tie him down to a new contract but want to significantly reduce his wages, something that the 32-year-old will have to accept if he is to remain at the club.

At the time of signing the contract Alexis Sanchez had recently made the move to Old Trafford, where he was given a healthy wage of £400,000-a-week, giving De Gea leverage when it came to negotiating his own contract at the time.

After joining from Atlético Madrid in 2011, De Gea has amassed more than 500 appearances and even broken Peter Schmeichel’s club record for the most clean sheets (183).

Still a vital part of the club’s first team squad, United boss Erik ten Hag has praised the ‘keeper in recent weeks for a number of impressive saves he has made.

There could be change in the goalkeeping department elsewhere at Old Trafford with Dean Henderson looking likely to depart in the summer.

Henderson publicly criticised the club after he claimed that he was promised he would become the first choice goalkeeper after Euro 2020 only to find his options limited and has spent the season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

United return to action on Sunday in a crucial clash against fellow top four rivals Newcastle United – a repeat of the Carabao Cup final showdown last month which the Red Devils won 2-0.
