During a press conference reported by BBC, Gerald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, confirmed the deployment of 35,000 security personnel and the military to safeguard the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games. The minister of France reported, “Drones represent a totally new threat. We’ve done a lot of work on the classic threat, whether it’s delinquents, whether it is a person armed with a weapon, a bomb, whatever that bomb… We know how to detect and combat this threat”.

Darmanin added, “The arrival of drones loaded with explosives in the theatre of civilian operations is new. There is no certainty this threat will materialize, but it is the hardest to stop.”As Paris confronts security risks such as drone strikes, climate activists, and anti-government protests, he emphasized the importance of intelligence sharing with European police forces, to prevent potential terrorism threats. With expectations of over 600,000 attendees, including 100,000 individuals paying up to 2,700 euros per seat, the Games’ opening event promises to be a captivating spectacle.
