The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the governing body responsible for anti-doping measures in tennis, has recently come under heavy fire. Serena Williams‘ former coach has accused the organization of unfair and ineffective measures in the case of star player Simona Halep. Patrick Mouratoglou has tweeted his support for Halep while questioning the ITIA’s competence and the fairness of their practices.

Halep, a celebrated two-time Grand Slam champion, has been hit with a second allegation of doping violations. The former world No.1 remains under provisional suspension following a positive doping test the previous year. The ITIA announced that Halep’s athlete biological passport (ABP) was irregular. In the fight against doping, ABPs are utilized to monitor an athlete’s blood indicators over some time – searching for signs of any potential anomalies.

This recent setback in Halep’s case has provoked criticism from her coach, Mouratoglou. Serena Williams’ former coach can’t help but characterize it as ‘harassment’ from the anti-doping bodies. In the same vein, Mouratoglou argues that many athletes who have tested positive for banned substances may have had the unfortunate misfortune of accidental contamination rather than deliberate cheating.

The hearing for Halep’s doping case has been postponed for the third time by tennis authorities earlier this week. In the meantime, Mouratoglou has expressed his support for her while criticizing the International Tennis Federation and International Tennis Integrity Agency.

In her recent Insta post, Mouratoglou wrote, ” The ITF continues to behave as badly as they have been since the start. This is a shame for our sport!”

He even explained, ” They probably want to show the world they are worth something. The immense majority of the player they have tested positive in the last years are victims of a contamination. Where are the people who are really doing doping? Still playing.”

The French coach also tweeted, “The @ITFTennis through their ITIA are continuing their incredible campaign of harassment of Simona. ”

He even added, “Justice delayed is justice denied. Think about it @ITFTennis”

The conflicting narratives and the ongoing postponement of the hearing have only intensified the complexity of the situation for Halep and the tennis community as a whole.

Halep had once shared details about her break

Following her early exit in the 2022 US Open, Halep decided to take a break from the tennis circuit. She had even assured her fans of her return in the upcoming season. Before the doping controversy unfolded, Halep had planned to address her long-standing breathing difficulties by undergoing nose surgery. Just a few days later, the agency issued doping charges against the tennis ace.
