Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has called for Lionel Messi to return to the club this summer, explaining that forging an on-pitch relationship with the Argentine would be 'very easy'.

Messi will leave Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expires at the end of June, bringing an end to his two-season stay in the French capital.

Barça were forced to part ways with Messi in 2021 as they were unable to register his contract under La Liga's strict financial regulations.

90min reported on Friday that Barcelona are waiting on approval from La Liga to advance with their summer plans, which include re-signing Messi on a free transfer from PSG.

Messi is also weighing up a contract offer from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, who are believed to be willing to pay him over €1bn across three years.

In an interview with SPORT, Lewandowski admitted he wants Messi to return to Catalonia and is excited at the prospect of linking up with him.

"We have to wait to see if Leo comes to Barcelona. I hope he comes. Maybe something more concrete will be known in a few days," he said.

"I know that playing with him is very easy, because Leo can play with you from any position on the field at any time in the game. He is a player that any team would like to have.

"He's not just a Barcelona legend, he's the one who changed the club. It will be fantastic if he returns to Barcelona."

Lewandowski has helped fire Barcelona to their first La Liga title in the post-Messi era this season, scoring 23 goals with one round of fixtures remaining.

The Pole is set to win the coveted Pichichi Trophy too, sitting five goals clear atop the scoring charts.
