So this year’s US Open has become the second ‘grass’ court grand slam of the year after Maria Sakkari complained she could smell a waft of marijuana as she suffered a shock exit from the tournament.

The Class B drug is illegal in the United Kingdom but there’s no problem possessing cannabis in New York City if you’re over the age of 21.

Alexander Zverev also complained Court 17 smelled like ‘Snoop Dogg’s living room’ but an investigation held by the US Tennis Association was unable to weed out the perpetrators and concluded the smokers may have been imbibing their substances outside the Flushing Meadows arena.

Fortunately, one thing that didn’t go to pot was our bet on all four British players advancing in the men’s singles on Tuesday with Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans and Jack Draper all covering the -5.5 games handicap to reach the second round and bring in the accumulator at odds of around 10/1.

  4. Will Andy Murray next coach a Brit and is Novak Djokovic heading for retirement?

Can our golden boys do it again and all reach the third round?

Well, the simple answer is probably not. Andy Murray faces a difficult task against Grigor Dimitrov but is evens with Betway among others to prevail.

Norrie is 3/4 with Ladbrokes and Coral to ease past Yu Hsiou Hsu with a winning margin of over 7.5 games while 26th seed Evans is 6/5 with the same two firms to defeat Botic Van De Zandschulp by over 4.5 games.

The Brit most in danger of making a second-round exit is the promising Jack Draper.

The youngster has been beset by a shoulder injury this year and the prospect of facing Hubert Hurkacz, the 17th seed from Poland, would be daunting enough without that hindrance.

Hurkacz is 19/10 with Betway to advance into the next round by beating Draper by over 5.5 games.

Stick Murray, Norrie, Evans and Hurkacz in an accumulator at the aforementioned prices and it should return a nice profit at around 20/1.

• British No.1 Katie Boulter has already gone further at the US Open than ever before and the 27-year-old from Leicester can make it a year to remember by advancing to the women’s singles third round with victory over Wang Yafan at 11/8 with multiple firms including Sky Bet.

• Charlie Hills’ Equilateral, an impressive winner at York’s Ebor Festival, is 7/2 with Paddy Power and Betfair to win the Beverley Sprint Bullet at the East Yorkshire racecourse on Saturday.
