The Civil Empowerment and Rule of Law Support Initiative (CERLSI) has urged President Bola Tinubu to invest all the monies being proposed for the renovation of offices of the President and Vice President for the completion of the abandoned national library in Abuja.

CERLSI, in a statement released by its deputy executive director, Bob MajiriOghene Etemiku, said that at this time of dwindling economic fortunes, such expenditure in office spaces for politicians is counterproductive and does not speak well of the present administration’s ability to manage scarce resources.

“Libraries are buildings that develop human capacity. It is in these buildings that ideas and research that lead to the production of the SUVs and yachts that Mr President wants to buy are developed,” Etemiku said in the statement.

“Our national library in Abuja has been abandoned for 16 years, and all that time, we have seen growth in poverty, unemployment and insecurity.

“If the government therefore is committed to tackling these issues, it should focus on critical infrastructure that develop human capacity like the library, not office buildings for themselves and their cronies,” he said.

CERLSI is a civil society organization focused on citizen engagement and capacity building, rule of law, community advocacy, media & human rights.
