Three Senn High School students were shot, one fatally, during a shooting in the Edgewater neighborhood on the North Side Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

The three victims, CPS students between 15 and 16, were walking in the 1200 block of West Thorndale Avenue, just east of Senn High School, when gunmen inside a vehicle got out and opened fire toward the teens around 4 p.m., police Superintendent Larry Snelling told reporters Wednesday evening. Snelling said the victims were Senn students.

Two victims went to Ascension St. Francis in Evanston in critical condition and one was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition, according to Chicago fire officials.

One teen died, while another remains hospitalized in critical condition and the third victim had stabilized after being shot in the leg, said Snelling, who was joined by Mayor Brandon Johnson. The slain teen was identified as Daveon Gibson, 16, of Humboldt Park, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

“Our city is hurting,” said Johnson, who called for an end to “the harm and the chaos and the trauma that is being caused by individuals who do not value life.”

“These tragic shootings happen too often,” Johnson said. “The loss of life is horrific under all circumstances but it is especially harsh when our young people are targeted.”

The mayor vowed to use the “full force of government” to end violence against young people “Whatever conflict or whatever pain you are expressing, this is not the way to do it.”

The shooting came nearly a week after two teens were fatally shot after leaving their high school in the Loop. Snelling said there was no evidence that the shootings were connected.

About an hour after the shooting, police tape blocked off West Thorndale. A delivery driver who asked not to be named said she was delivering packages on the street when she saw people who appeared to be teenagers pull up in a gray car. The teens started shooting at what she said seemed like other teens.

No arrests had been made in the shooting, as the investigation got underway.
