‘He doesn’t have the pace’… Tom Cairney says 26-year-old West Ham player really isn’t quick

Lucas Paqueta is quickly establishing himself as one of the best players in the Premier League.

The Brazilian is a massive player for West Ham, and his return to action this week just showed how brilliant he is and what a difference he makes to this team.

Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Tom Cairney and Michail Antonio have been discussing Paqueta’s ability and his position, and Cairney was rather intrigued by where Paqueta has been playing.

The Brazilian has often been used on the left wing at West Ham, and Cairney was surprised by this as he believes he doesn’t have the pace to get down that flank and utilise the ball properly on his preferred left foot.

Lucas Paqueta doesn’t have the pace to play left wing

Cairney spoke about the West Ham star.

“What is his natural position because he’s not a left winger is he? That’s very difficult to play on the side you kick on is very difficult, he’s playing on the left when he’s left-footed is hard. He doesn’t have the pace to go on the outside you would say, but he’s just a tremendous footballer,” Cairney said.

Doesn’t need it

Cairney is right, Paqueta doesn’t quite have the pace to leave defenders for dead down that left wing, but the reality is that he doesn’t need it.

Yes, pace is an important attribute for any player, but Paqueta’s mind is so much quicker than his opponents that he doesn’t need to be that explosive on the pitch.

Cairney ought to know that better than anyone. He plays with Willian on a weekly basis, and while the Fulham star isn’t as quick as he once was, he’s able to control most games he plays due to his incredible football IQ.
