City of Durham MP Mary Kelly Foy has announced she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In a statement shared on Friday night, the Labour MP said she was recovering after undergoing surgery on Thursday and "should make a full recovery".

It was diagnosed in February, the MP said, with Ms Foy thanking the NHS breast screening programme for spotting it "early".

The MP will be away from Parliament for a "short spell" to recover.

Ms Foy, 56, has represented the City of Durham seat since 2019.

In her statement, shared on X, formerly Twitter, she encouraged women to "make sure they attend their screening" as a potential life-saving measure.
