Finidi begins Super Eagles’ job with 2-1 win over Ghana

The defeat handed Otto Addo his first national team managerial loss. Jose Peseiro left the job immediately after he took the Super Eagles to a second place finish at the last AFCON in Coted’Ivoire for Finidi to step in.

Rangers FC Cyril Dessers, who made a comeback to the national team after missing out of the AFCON, gave Nigeria the lead from the penalty spot in the 38th minute as the Eagles head into half-time with a 1-0 lead.

Jerome Poku was handed a marching order in the in the 56th minute after a clumsy challenge to reduce Ghanaians to ten men.

Nigeria enjoyed majority of the possession and also had bulk of chances begging to be converted to double their lead but failed to put any at the back of the net.

Ademola Lookman, who replaced debutant Tanimu Benjamen, in the 79th minute, wasted no time to announce his presence, slicing in the second of the night in the 84th minutes.

But captain Jordan Ayew reduced the deficit in a consolation scoring from the penalty kick in the 93rd minute as Eagles ran out eventual 1-2 winners.

The victory was more like an elderly brother revenge after the Black Princesses of Ghana defeated Falconets 2-1 on Thursday to claim gold in the women football tournament of the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana.
