NBF sets eyes on Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier in Thailand

After a successful outing at the just-concluded 13th African Games in Ghana, the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has turned its attention to the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier scheduled for Thailand in May.

Team Nigeria dominated the boxing event at the African Games, where it won eight gold and two silver medals.

According to the NBF Secretary General, Dapo Akinyele, over five boxers will travel to Thailand for the qualifying window in May in their bid to join their three colleagues, who have already sealed their passage to Paris.

Akinyele said: “With our fine outing in Accra, we hope to box our way into the French capital come July for the biggest sporting feast on earth.

“The coaches have been doing an excellent job and we hope to see more positive results in the days to come. We are elated with the Team’s outing at the African Games.”

Since the London 2012 Olympics, Nigeria has found it difficult to field boxers in subsequent editions of the games.

At the Rio de Janeiro 2016 edition, the country could only present one boxer, Efe Ajagba, at the games, while the country’s fighters failed to make the list for the Japan 2020 edition.

The NBF said its mission this term is to ensure that many Nigerians make the boxing event, with at least two getting to the medals zone in Paris .
