Bill Belichick gets roasted by his son, Steve, during Washington football presser

Steve Belichick’s cadence and voice might mimic his father, Bill.

But the former Patriots assistant coach might have his dad beat when it comes to his comedic timing, at least during press conferences.

Steve Belichick, who left the Patriots organization earlier this winter to take on a new role as the defensive coordinator of the University of Washington Huskies, has a ways to go when it comes to equalling his father’s Hall-of-Fame resume as a coach.

But while holding court with reporters on Wednesday, Belichick made sure to get a dig in against his dad when it comes to his current career prospects.

“Um, no, I mean, we definitely have similarities,” Belichick began when asked about the similarities and differences between him and his father. “Um, I got a job and he doesn’t.”

The response drew plenty of laughs, with Belichick adding: “He knows that.”

While Steve Belichick is charting a new coaching path out on the West Coast, his father’s future in the NFL remains murky.

After “parting ways” with the Patriots in January, the elder Belichick surprisingly did not land a job during the NFL’s latest head-coaching hiring cycle. Even though the 71-year-old Belichick will likely assess the coaching job market again next January, he might have to pivot to a TV gig for the 2024 campaign.

Even though Steve Belichick opted for a new opportunity with the Huskies, his younger brother, Brian, is staying with the Patriots as a coach on Jerod Mayo’s revamped staff.

Dispute the initial joke doled out at his dad’s expense, Steve Belichick did later praise his father for his role in guiding him toward his own career in coaching.

“But yeah, I mean, I look up to my dad. He’s a mentor to me,” Steve said. “But I’m myself. And yeah, like B.C. [Washington OC Brennan Carroll, the son of Pete Carroll] said, excited to get out onto the field and work with these guys and work with kids and recruit kids. And that’s kinda — I’m just gonna be myself. I’m not gonna try and be him.”
