The beaver was given the status of national animal when Parliament passed the National Symbol of Canada Act as beavers have a long history with the country. From being Canada's main profit-making attraction in the 1500s, to being featured on the first postage stamp!

It's Canada!

In 2018, Pakistan International Airlines temporarily added a markhor image to the tail of every plane.

It's Pakistan!

The lion is a traditional symbol of bravery, strength and valour. For as long as England has had a shield to represent the country, there has been a lion on it.

It's England!

The elephant is considered to be sacred in Buddhist iconography. Thailand even has a "National Elephant Day" to celebrate their importance in society.

The brown bear is prominently featured in Finnish mythology, appearing on postage stamps also.

It's Finland!

The Masai giraffe is protected under their Wildlife Conservation Act, and in Swahili they are known as "twiga". Up until 2011 giraffes were also used as watermarks on Tanzanian banknotes.

In 1980, Indonesia established a Komodo National Park to protect both the species and their habitat. You can only find Komodo Dragons amongst a few of the Indonesian islands.

The American bison was named their national mammal in 2016, joining the bald Eagle as the official symbol of the country. Yellowstone National Park is the only place in the country where bison have continuously lived since prehistoric times.

It's United States of America!

The Commonwealth Coat of Arms is the formal symbol of the country, and features both a kangaroo and an emu holding up the shield. Both animals were picked as neither are capable of moving backwards, and so act as a symbol of progression. The kangaroo is also only native to Australia.

It's thought that the unicorn was first introduced to the Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland around the mid-1500s. Before Scotland's union with England in 1603 (Union of the Crowns), the arms had two unicorns. In Celtic mythology, the unicorn represents purity, innocence, and power.

The fennec fox is also the nickname for the country's football team "Les Fennecs". It's most likely to be spotted in arid regions of Algeria, as well as some other North African countries.

Dolphins are frequently depicted in Greek art and associated with the Greek god, Delphinus.

Also known as the Eurasian Elk, this animal is well adapted to Sweden's woodlands.

It's Sweden!

China is the only natural habitat for giant pandas. Their imagery is used as symbolism throughout the country: on gold coins and as one of the mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, for example.

It's China!

India also has the Bengal tiger as their national animal. They are also known as Royal Bengal tigers.

It's Bangladesh!
