Aw, shucks. Bummer … The annual “4/20” celebration of all things cannabis will not happen in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this April 20. Blame city-wide budget cuts and the cannabis industry’s inability to sponsor the event.
But all is not lost. Several events on the Other Coast plus various 4/20 gift ideas may help console the party animals of Hippie Hill and their fellow celebrants:
A Takeover of the famous One Times Square billboard by Mike Tyson, boxing icon and co-founder of cannabis brand Tylor 2.0 and Royal Queen Seeds. The billboard takeover will occur on the big day, 4/20, from 4:10 to 4:19 pm with a final countdown for the next 60 seconds.
Pizza Block Party Launching Gotham Gardens in New York on 4/20. Gotham, the upscale cannabis concept store, is observing its very first 4/20 by partnering with Upside Pizza to launch Gotham Gardens. The aim is to turn the Soho pizza spot on Spring Street into a cannabis culinary haven, together with beats by local New York DJs and a surprise musical performance. 4/20 patrons will also have the opportunity to play games and win prizes when they shop that day at Gotham.
Housing Works Cannabis Co (HWCC), New York’s first legal dispensary, will give away free tote bags on 4/20 to the first 100 customers who make a purchase in celebration of the holiday and the dispensary’s remodeling. The tote bag will be emblazoned with “Make Love Not Drug War” and contain non-THC products and lifestyle accessories like rolling trays and a portable coffee cup-style water pipe. HWCC will also host a DJ, a pet-friendly photo booth and refreshments.

New York has lots more going on in observance of 4/.20. As Roger Volodarsky, co-founder and CEO of Puffco, known for its vaporizers, said by email: “Growing up in New York and starting Puffco there, 4/20 was a celebration of the plant that happened in these secret silos.
“What 4/20 has turned into, especially in places like New York, is a real celebration of freedom,” Volodarsky continued. “You’re now able to leave your house and consume cannabis freely with others in the community. Not having the use of this plant attached to the risk of losing your freedom is a new reality for New Yorkers and it’s one that they are ready to celebrate. If you want to witness it for yourself, just go to Washington Square Park for 4/20.”

You have options: In New Jersey and Massachusetts on the East Coast, and Illinois, Michigan, and Missouri in the Midwest, C3 Industries has already (Sept.13) launched “420 Daze” celebrations at its High Profile dispensaries.
