NANS seeks SGF’s intervention in leadership crisis

LUCKY EMONEFE

THE leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students has petitioned the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, demanding the arrest and prosecution of the factional President of NANS, Pedro Obi, over the alleged impersonation of NANS President, Lucky Emonefe.

Emonefe, on Thursday, led hundreds of students on a solidarity rally to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, where he presented the position paper to Akume.

The petition was received on SGF’s behalf by the Deputy Security Officer, Haliru Musa.

Obi had, in an interview granted The PUNCH after the election, announced himself as the winner, saying, “I did my best in line with our constitution. The election was conducted, and at the end of the day, I won with 212 votes against my opponents, Sunday, who had 49 votes, and Lucky Emonefe, who had about 64 votes.”

There had been a crisis in the association, with each faction laying claims to the leadership of the student body.

On Tuesday, in a trending video on X, formerly Twitter, the two factions engaged in a bloody clash that left one severely injured in the Federal Capital Territory.

Both factions were led by the duo of Obi from Delta State University and Emonefe from the College of Education, Warri, Delta State.

The FCT Police Command, on Tuesday, said it had commenced an investigation into the recent attacks and counterattacks launched by the factional leaders of NANS against one another in the territory.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the development in a WhatsApp message on Tuesday, following an inquiry by The PUNCH.

Speaking at the office of the SGF, Emonefe alleged that since Obi, a card-carrying member of the Peoples Democratic Party and immediate past Special Assistant to Delta State Governor on Student Matters, lost the election at the NANS convention held between November 27 and December 3, 2023, he had been parading himself as NANS President, after declaring himself the winner of the election.

Emonefe, therefore, urged the Federal Government to direct security agencies to arrest  Obi, who he described as an ‘impostor’, to avert students from taking the law into their own hands.
