Chelsea may need to “sacrifice” Conor Gallagher early this summer to fund their new transfer plans with Tottenham still in hot pursuit, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that clubs remain interested in Gallagher, 24, and he is likely to be sold to help appease the Blues’ continuing financial struggles.
Now, it is believed that manager Mauricio Pochettino is “well aware” that his side will have to sanction player departures to fund their own business – and Gallagher is high on the club’s list of those who could be sold.
The Todd Boehly-led club are planning to sign new players in the off-season, with Football Insider revealing (8 April) that they are eyeing a move for in-demand Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams.
Chelsea may sanction Gallagher sale to Tottenham
Gallagher will enter the final year of his deal at the London giants at the start of next season, and sources have told Football Insider (9 March) that new contract talks have completely stalled.
This has motivated Chelsea to sanction a move for the midfielder, who is still on Tottenham’s radar, before they lose him as a free agent.
Gallagher’s sale would represent pure profit on the club’s books as he is an academy product.
His departure would need to be sanctioned before 30 June, the date clubs have to register their accounts, after Chelsea recorded losses of £211.5million in the last two seasons.
Chelsea sit ninth in the Premier League table after their 6-0 win against Everton at Stamford Bridge on Monday night (15 April).
They are next in FA Cup action against title-chasing Man City in the semi-final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening (20 April).
